Prominent Ears
Patient's whose ears "stick out" can be very self-conscious and children may be the focus of unwanted attention. Even in an era when Disney's flying elephant hasn't been seen by children the name "Dumbo ears" gets used. Children can be very cruel to each other and can tease and harass their classmates who are "different". And their victims can become socially withdrawn and do poorly in school. They lose their self-esteem.
One of my patient's was a very attractive young lady in her thirties who always wore her hair long to cover her ears. She was unhappy with how they stuck out. She had endured kidding as a child and was extremely self-conscious of her appearance and came to have her ears "pinned back". At her final post-op up visit she arrived smiling ear to ear sporting a new short hair style and earrings, which she had never worn.
There was a young lad of 6 who reminded his mother of his appointment. He had been held back a year in school as he was targeted and kidded by his classmates for his ears which were very prominent. He looked forward to his surgery even at the age of 6 and was all smiles afterward.
These are examples of how Plastic Surgery can impact a person's life; restoring the body to a normal image which can influence self-confidence.
